Since their arrival in 2006, Sr
Elizabeth Donnan, has been engaged in the collaborative support of
science and mathematics in the two secondary schools in Lukulu, training
and assisting teachers in conducting practical experiments and building
up the laboratory facilities. Such is her positive influence a number
of teachers independently requested that she helps them upgrade their
mathematic qualifications, which is now done on an ongoing basis each
week after school hours. Sr Elizabeth has also been engaged in
cathechetics in the schools and in two rural villages 10-20 kms from
Lukulu itself. Through her involvement with these village communities
she has become engaged in the development of community schools.
These are schools, usually consisting of rudimentary mud and thatch
buildings, which the community have constructed themselves in order to
educate their children, who would otherwise receive no education.
The children are taught by untrained volunteer mentors from the
community, who if they are lucky may receive maize or other foodstuffs
grown by the impoverished community as a form of remuneration. A recent dimension to the education aspect of the Sister's ministry is that of supporting the accommodation of girls who have come from distant villages for secondary education in Lukulu itself. The sisters provide food and accommodation fees for fifteen girls in a dormitory recently opened by the Oblate Fathers and Parish community. This dormitory project was initiated so that the girl-child may have a safe environment to live and study when they are forced to move from their remote village communities in order that they can complete their education. Sr Pat Hanvey, who initally became involved in coordinating an already existing Home Based Care (HBC) Programme for people living with HIV/AIDS, has since developed a comprehensive Health Care Programme at the Parish. In addition to the HBC this now actively comprises some of her early projects; the construction of a Counselling Testing and Care Centre (CTC) for HIV/AIDS, a milk programme for orphaned and vulnerable babies, a HEPS (High Energy Protein Supplement) production project, and more recently a mobile VCT (Voluntary Testing and Counseling) service to remote RHCs (Rural Health Centres) was added. She works collaboratively with the local poorly resourced District Health authorities and community volunteers to render these services. The construction and development of a new Rural Health Centre in an adjacent Parish some 80 kms from the District Hospital in Lukulu and 20 kms from the nearest available health post to the impoverished community who will benefit form this clinic, is the latest venture embarked upon. The Sisters pay tribute and wish to acknowledge the wonderful support which they have received from many friends and benefactors, without whom they could not have undertaken the ministry and developments with which they have been actively engaged in Lukulu since 2006.
