WHAT IS CLINICAL PASTORAL EDUCATION (CPE)??
Clinical Pastoral Education is professional education for ministry. It trains clergy, religious and laity of all faiths for work in pastoral care - in other words it brings them into supervised encounter with persons in crisis. Out of an intense involvement with persons in need, and the feedback from peers and supervisors, the students develop new awareness of themselves as persons and of the needs of those to whom they minister. From theological reflection on specific human situations, they gain new understanding of the human situation. Within the interdisciplinary team process of helping persons, they develop skills in interpersonal and interprofessional relationships.
CPE is a method and standard of training that is well established in all five Continents. The focus is not on text books and lectures, but upon disciplined and supervised reflection on real life experiences with people who are hurting - what we call the living human document.
THE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS IN CPE INCLUDE:
* a specific time period
* the actual practice of ministry to persons
* detailed reporting and evaluation of that practice
* pastoral supervision
* a process conception of learning
* a small group of peers in a common learning experience
THE ASSOCIATION FOR CLINICAL PASTORAL EDUCATION OF SOUTHERN AFRICA (ACPESA)
The first CPE course was offered in South Africa in 1970. ACPESA was introduced to South Africa in 1975 among the Anglican, Roman Catholic and Methodist Churches and has grown to be accepted by many others. It is open to people of all faiths who are called to minister to the wholeness needs of others.
